Te Ara Kākāriki projects will foster and speed up the rate of restoration of native plant communities through the planting of greendots, extension and education.
So why native plants?
- Native plants are part of our clean green image.
- Native plants are part of our natural heritage.
- Native hedges and shelterbelts are made up of a variety of species and will therefore support other native wildlife.
- Native plantings can be ‘companion plantings’ and in doing so will support insects beneficial to horticulture and agriculture.
- The variety of native plants in native plant communities helps reduce risks of flooding, fire and erosion.
- Permanent native plantings can be used as carbon sinks.
- Native plants could be used as crops.
